Humanities Core Year Long Research Study 2005-2006

Last update 2005-12-19. (ISO YYYY-MM-DD)

Every year we collect sample student essays which are useful to us in the following ways:

  1. To see how assignments work.
  2. To collect samples for future grade norming or discussion of students' typical writing styles.
  3. To provide a basis for possible research on students' writing development within core - or after they leave core.

Teachers are always trying to improve their practices, especially regarding the teaching of writing.  In order to reflect on that process, we need samples of student writing.  With this form, we are requesting your permission to use the writing you produce for this course for research and teacher-training purposes.  We occasionally publish the results of these studies in professional journals or discuss them at conferences.

Here are the conditions:

  1. All work is kept completely confidential.  Your name will not appear on any writing used for research purposes.
  2. None of the research that will occur while you are enrolled will involve your current teacher in the Humanities Core Course.
  3. Your grade for the course won’t be affected in any way.
  4. You can change your mind and take back your consent at any time.
  5. If you have an interest in reading on-going research at any time and commenting on the way student writing is represented, you may do so.
